Preparing for College
Grade 12
August September October November

*Commit to do your best   work and take the most challenging courses

* Make an appointment with your counselor to discuss college options

* Start applying for college using applytexas.org or check for college websites for individual applications

* Check FHS website for scholarship opportunities

* Take the SAT/ACT

* Attend college recruiter meetings

* Continue your college search via their websites checking deadline dates

* Set up accounts with free scholarship/college search websites (www.fastweb.com)

* Set up parent and student pin number via fafsa.ed.gov

* Start asking teachers, counselors, employers for recommendation letters – remember to provide resume

* Narrow list of colleges/universities you want to attend and discuss with parents

* Check dates for scholarships opportunities

* Verify transcript is accurate

* Attend college day – prepare questions

* Utilize collegboard.com and/or act.org to prepare for SAT and ACT

* Utilize the FHS website to take practice ACT and SAT tests

* Attend College 101 night for parents and students

* Begin preparing financial records for FAFSA and ask for help if you need it

* Check university/college websites for early decision admission deadlines

December January February March

* Continue to look for scholarship and financial aid resources

* Register to take the SAT/ACT tests

* Continue preparing financial records for FAFSA

* See you counselor for any PSAT report questions

* Check transcript accuracy at the end of 1st semester

* Prepare to file income taxes/Complete your FAFSA ASAP

* Check admissions applications status

* Continue to look for scholarship and financial aid resources

* Apply for financial aid well before priority deadlines

* Complete FAFSA if you have not already done so

* Finish strong the 2nd semester; college DON’T appreciate senior it is

* Begin applying for local scholarships

* Watch your mail/emails for college letters

* Check status of college applications

* Continue applying for local scholarships

* Attend FAFSA night for help applying for student aid

* Watch mail for Student Aid Report (SAR report)

April May June

* Register and study for AP Exams

* Review college acceptances

* Visit  the campuses of your top 2 college choices

* Review financial aid packages

* Apply for school housing early

* Take AP Exams

* Prepare for semester finals

* Send thank you notes to teacher and counselors

* Notify colleges that you did not choose so they can offer admission to others who wrote recommendations

* Follow up with acceptance letter for enrollment, financial aid, and housing

* Request final transcripts

* Attend orientation meeting for college

* Pack for college and look forward to the next chapter in your life
